Ship of Fools

An online magazine for “people who prefer disorganized religion to the organized kind,” according to editor Simon Jenkins. His co-editor chimes in: “We are bored by the dull conservatism of most Christian periodicals.” So Ship of Fools has been running a series on “the popes, saints and clerics who weren’t so much holy fools as religious imbeciles”, sent its Mystery Worshipper to report on a charismatic preacher in Las Vegas, keeps a collection of “sermon blunders”, and recently was able to announce the marketing of a white plastic gadget that turns your iPod Shuffle into a cross you can wear on a lanyard around your neck. The magazine features are accompanied by a lively online community, including Heaven, Hell and Purgatory bulletin boards, where “shipmates” debate everything from “Religion and Buffy the Vampire Slayer” to the status of Mormonism and “Hitchcock and Catholic Guilt”. Oh, and there’s a Caption Contest: most recently a photo of a nun in white robes on the basketball court.
