Funeral Policy

Funeral/memorial services may be provided for members and adherents of Westminster United Church and as situations so warrant, for those from outside the congregation.

Funeral Guidelines

  1. Funeral/memorial services may be provided for members and adherents of Westminster United Church and as situations so warrant, for those from outside the congregation. Other traditions or clergy may be invited to participate. If so, our minister will work with them to ensure that ecumenical and interfaith aspects of other faith traditions may be honoured during the Christian service. Our minister has the right of first refusal for all funerals using the Westminster Register.
  2. Funeral/memorial services in the Westminster United Church sanctuary may be provided for members of congregations that share the use of The Cedars facilities. These services may or may not be Christian. Our minister should be invited to participate.
  3. Westminster United Church and its Minister shall not discriminate in the provision of funeral/memorial services on the basis of gender or genders or race.
  4. Picture taking and video-taping by guests during the service may cause disruption and should be discussed with our minister. No flash photography will be allowed during the service. Our minister will discuss limits with service providers before the service.
  5. A fee schedule is available to outline funeral costs.

Funerals at The Cedars

When The Cedars is the location, the following policies also apply:
  1. As Westminster is in an interfaith relationship with Temple Shalom, a Jewish faith community, flowers or memorials may not be put up for a Saturday funeral service until after Temple Shalom's Saturday worship is complete. The timing of this will require consultation and booking. Both the preparation and the disassembly must be discussed with our minister.
  2. Westminster’s pianist shall have the right of first refusal in the provision of music for all funeral/memorial services. Music to be used is expected to be fitting for a service of worship and must be approved by the pianist and our minister.

Please call the church office for further information.
